Penama province: Drinking water supply for Maewo
Maewo has a population of approximately 3,000 which is served by the two medical centres at the north and south of the island. Drinking water supplies are poor at both locations leading to approximately 15% of presentations at the medical centres being water related.
For this trip we took along representatives from the Department of Health and the Department of Water so they could see for themselves the Trunz Survivor unit in operation and how easy and simple it is to use. The units were very well received and within one hour of the unit being in operation there were queues of people waiting to fill up water containers.
Dr Roderick Mera at Kerebei Medical Centre, the only doctor on the island, will take overall responsibility for the units.
